Hot 8 Brass Band - New Orleans…

June 9th, 2009  |  Published in Essential Gigs, Music News, Previous Events

This is going to be special…

The Hot 8’s energy is legendary - regularly playing all day in the sun, then hopping to a club gig and playing through the night. Beyond this, it is the incredible sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns that makes the Hot 8 Brass Band so special.

The band brings together elements of modern and traditional music to create a unique, new class of brass music drawing on both the new urban culture, and the historical energy in the New Orleans music scene. Still grounded in the grass roots, they are frequently involved in local second-line parades and musical battles [face offs] with local jazz bands on the streets.

It was not until after Hurricane Katrina, that Hot 8’s reputation spread beyond New Orleans. They featured on CNN, in the New York Times and, most notably, in Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary, “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts”. Hot 8’s work with the Finding Our Folk Tour has helped considerably in supporting those displaced by Katrina.

The Hot 8’s version of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing was one of the most eagerly awaited singles there has been on the Tru Thoughts label. This is your chance to join Jibbering and Leftfoot, and catch the finest New Orleans dance band of the moment, live and intimate …

Some Essential Gigs for this week

November 10th, 2008  |  Published in Essential Gigs, Music News

This weekend saw some top acts traveling to Brum to strut their stuff, with special events such as Gigbeth and Drop Beats Not Bombs and showcasing such acts as The Sugar Hill Gang and Biggabush providing some of their greatest attractions. For those of you who didn’t manage to catch Heducation or Drop Beats, you may have come across The Destroyers playing in The Prince of Wales, Moseley, Mama MatrixJohn Mostyn’s new company, CID’s music showcase in headlining The Rainbow or the fantastic Friendly Fire Band lead by Pablo Rider and Tomlin Mystic at The Adam and Eve, Digbeth. It seems that Birmingham artists led the way this weekend and there was plenty of gigs to choose from.

Adam Regan and the Leftfoot crew deserve a mention for playing host to the legendary Basement Jaxx in The Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath, which sold out soon after tickets became available, continuing to offer a great alternative to larger, less intimate venues.

So, whether you were broke or had money to burn at the weekend, there was plenty to choose from. Did you attend any of these events? We would love to hear your comments, so drop us a message and express yourself.  Are you planning to go to any great gigs this week? There are plenty to choose from again, so here’s Jibbering’s top tips for the next 7 days:

For anyone who enjoyed the Black Seeds gig at The Hare and Hounds on November 1st, you may want to catch some more Kiwi music and there is some great stuff on offer! Kora will be playing in Stourbridge on Wednesday night and Barfly, Digbeth on Thursday. Expect dramatic Dub, Reggae, Drum ‘n’ Bass, beats and a live energy which has earned international acclaim worldwide. On Friday night, prepare for a feast of funk, with the phenomenal Fat Freddy’s Drop. If you haven’t yet familiarised yourself with their soulful reggae and generally brasstastic sound, lead by DJ Moo, then check out their website. We have plenty of Fat Freddy’s music available in Jibbering Records, so please check it out. Birmingham has been steadily building a bond with this group, culminating in Overproof Sound System being invited to tour New Zealand and Australia earlier this year by the band, after the FFD crew played in Digbeth a couple of years ago and took the time out to check out Birmingham based talent at Roots DeVille in 2006 after their set nearby. Great Band, great attitude, great music. Fat Freddy’s Drop are playing at Birmingham Academy on Friday 14th November. Tickets are available from http://fatfreddysdroptickets.trinitystreetdirect.com.

Last but not least, our top tip for the week for all you funk and Hip Hop fans is the Funkbox gig on Saturday 15th November at The Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath, which will be showcasing the boundary crossing, DJ Format. It’s a long awaited return for this DJ, who recently toured with Jurassic 5 and has been working on acclaimed mixes such as his discretely released 12″ tribute to James Brown, entitled, ‘Stealin James‘. Tickets are a bargain at £8 and available from theticketsellers.co.uk, as well as Jibbering Records, Moseley. Also playing at this much anticipated event are Funkbox head honchos DJ Cro and Roy Roastbeef.

BLACK SEEDS; BOY COM; SEROCEE; JAM JAH SOUND: HOW GOOD?!!!

A big big thanks to all those who made such an effort for the gig. It was easily one of the best ever.

Boy Com outstripped all expectations. This new and young band performed a fantastic support set, that was well composed, self assured and promises much for the future… their rendition of the Jungle Book theme to finish was genius - watch out for these guys! We will definitely be having them back, but if you can’t wait they are supporting Finlay Quaye and Horace Andy over the coming weeks!

The Black Seeds what can we say! 2hrs of pure bliss! We had a fantastic evening with these guys. They were as heavy and tight on stage as you would expect after 4 studio albums, but their energy and vibe live is something very special to have experienced - catch them wherever and whenever you can! We will definitely have them back in the future, I can see them at Shamabla now!

Last but not least Serocee and our very own DJ Cro did an excellent job of building up the crowd and previewing their full live show that is part of next months Jibbering Live at the Hare and Hounds (6/12/08). Apart from Cro’s technology upping the tempo of its own accord (watch the machiene’s!), their micro-set was a warning shot for next month and bounced the crowd. It also included a preview of the next 7″ single on Crate Escape Records, “You’ll Never Find”. OFFICIAL LAUNCH PARTY NEXT JIBBERING LIVE (06/12/08) H & H.

As ever we would love YOUR feedback on the night so please drop us a line…

Less than two weeks to go now until our regular first saturday of the month live session, and there is a real buzz building around this one. Tickets are selling quickly and space at the hare and hounds is limited so don’t miss out. Available either in Jibbering or via The Ticket Sellers .

STOP PRESS… SUPPORT ANNOUNCED… In support we have lined up BOY COM, who will over the coming weeks also be supporting Finley Quaye and Horace Andy (Shambala personal moment of 2008, but thats another story!). Hailing from the south-west these guys are well and truly in the tradition of Bristolian Dub-hop! Heavy beats, smooth basslines and roaring brass, you can’t help but like these guys.

Also look out for news on another special guest, alongside the usual Jibbering suspects..!!!

Beyond our control… it is with regret we must also announce a change in line up for the Live Session on the 1st of December at the Hare and Hounds. Unfortunately Analogik can not make it over from Denmark. However, don’t be too disheartend, we have landed the excellent Edinburgh based outfit Big Hand! Big Hand have a cult underground status, sharing stages with the likes of Cat Empire and the Beat, they will take the place apart with their unique brand of Zorbic ska music.
